Iran’s Deputy Justice Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs ‎Mahmoud Abbasi (4th R) and Japan’s Ambassador to Iran Aikawa Kazutoshi (2nd L) attend a meeting in Tehran on May 22, 2021. ‎

Iran and Japan explored avenues for the promotion of legal and judicial interactions.

The issue was discussed in a meeting between Irans Deputy Justice Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs Mahmoud Abbasi and Japans Ambassador to Iran Aikawa Kazutoshi in Tehran on Saturday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The two officials weighed plans for the enhancement of legal and judicial relations between the two Asian nations.

Commenting on a treaty on the extradition of convicts that Iran and Japan had signed in 2016, Abbasi expressed Iran's readiness to raise the level of its judicial relations with Japan, IRNA reported.

He also proposed the idea of signing bilateral agreements on civil, criminal, commercial and extradition affairs.

Abbasi also hailed Japan's logical stances at the international and human rights forums and its votes in favor of Iran in the human rights conferences.

The Japanese envoy pointed to the longstanding relations between the two countries and their friendly and effective ties, saying his country welcomes expansion of legal and judicial cooperation with Iran.

He also noted that Japan will transfer four Iranian convicts to Tehran within the next two weeks in compliance with the agreement on the extradition of inmates.

In January 2015, Iran and Japan finalized details of an extradition treaty after five years of technical talks and exchange of diplomatic delegations.

The extradition treaty allows Iranian prisoners in Japan and Japanese inmates in Iran to return to their respective countries and complete their prison terms at home.
