Iranian president’s Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi speaks to Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev in a meeting in Tehran on May 30, 2021.

Tehran and Baku have managed to improve their relations to a strategic level in all arenas, said the Iranian president’s chief of staff.

In an address to a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev in Tehran on Sunday, Mahmoud Vaezi said this has been achieved in view of the serious resolve of the Iranian and Azeri presidents, Hassan Rouhani and Ilham Aliyev, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He stressed the need for implementing the agreements that the presidents of the two countries have signed in the past.

“Today, the ground has been prepared for making arrangements for the implementation of the (joint) projects that have been halted under the cruel US sanctions,” Vaezi added.

Mustafayev said plans for strengthening relations with Iran are top on the Republic of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy agenda.

The Azeri deputy prime minister also highlighted the two countries’ great capacities for cooperation in the energy, industrial, transportation, agriculture and tourism sectors.

Despite the coronavirus spread that has slowed global trade growth over the past months, exchanges between Azerbaijan and Iran rose by 27 percent amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he noted.

Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnerships in various areas.

The Azeri president has made several official visits to Tehran over the past few years.

In a Friday message to Aliyev, the Iranian president congratulated the “friend and brotherly” government and people of Azerbaijan on its Republic Day.

He expressed confidence that the two neighbors will strengthen cooperation, promote political, economic and cultural ties, and ensure regional peace and stability on the basis of their rich cultures, common historical backgrounds and mutual understanding.
