Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in a message, expressed his condolences over the passing of prominent Iranian Shia cleric Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour at the age of 75.
A former interior minister and a member of the Association of Combatant Clerics, Hojjatoleslam Mohtashamipour lost his life to COVID-19 on Monday, IRNA reported.
The Leader’s message read: “I condole with the respected family of the mujahid (warrior) cleric Mr. Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour. His activities in the battlefield that were succeeded by his revolutionary services following the victory of the  Islamic Revolution and acceptance of important responsibilities ever since and then, being targeted by the enemies in an act of terror are a valued and glorious record, which will help him receive God’s mercy and blessing.”
Ayatollah Khamenei also prayed to God to bestow patience to the family of the deceased.
The news of the death of Hojjatoleslam Mohtashamipour was confirmed by his daughter Zohreh-Sadat.
Mohtashamipour, who devoted his entire life to elevating Islam and the Islamic Republic, the liberation of the holy Al-Quds and defending the innocent people of Palestine, was among the founders of the Lebanese movement Hezbollah and spared no efforts to these ends, sacrificing his body and soul, according to a statement by his office.
He was about to be martyred in an act of terror, an explosion, by Israeli agents, in 1983. Mohtashamipour was very popular among innocent people and Muslims.
He was the interior minister from 1985-1989.
In another message on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed his condolences over the tragic event, saying after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the prominent cleric spent his entire life on promoting the Islamic movement and achieving the aspirations of the revolution and Islamic Establishment by assuming different political and cultural responsibilities.
In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condoled with the cleric’s family and Iranian people in a message on the same day.
Zarif said Hojjatoleslam Mohtashamipour was a an inexhaustible warrior of the Islamic Revolution, a companion of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini and a prominent statesman and ambassador of the Islamic Establishment.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf also expressed his condolences in a message, describing the cleric as a figure who truly served the Islamic Revolution and Establishment.
