Iran will participate at the Continental Futsal Championship in Thailand, as the Asian powerhouse prepares for the Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.

Mohammad Nazemasharieh’s team will be joined by the host, Egypt, Lithuania, and Uzbekistan – all taking part at the World Cup – as well as Tajikistan, Mozambique, and Kosovo at the competition, starting July 20, ISNA reported.

The eight teams will be drawn into two groups.

The event comes as a major boost to Nazemasharieh’s preparation plans, after two friendly matches in Japan had been called off because of the Asian country’s coronavirus measures during the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Iran had already seen an exhibition tournament in Shiraz, southcentral Iran, called off for unknown reasons.

Leila Yarmohammadi, the head of Futsal Department at Iran Football Federation, said last week that Iran has also received invitation from Belarus to play friendly fixtures in the European country.

Should Iran accept the offer, Iran will face Belarus twice in late August, according to Yarmohammadi.

The ninth edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup – postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic – will get underway at the Eastern European country on September 12.

Iran is pitted in Group F – described by Nazemasharieh as “the toughest group” of the competition – alongside defending champion Argentina, USA, and Serbia.

Iran made history in 2016 by becoming the first Asian side to reach the last-four of the World Cup, before finishing third in Colombia.

Iran last played a competitive match in 2018, when it lifted a record-extending 12th Asian trophy in Chinese Taipei.
