Iran to resume World Cup qualifiers against Syria in September

Sports Desk

Iran will be back in World Cup qualification action on September 2, taking on Syria at home in Group A of the Asian qualifiers.

The draw for the two six-team groups on Thursday saw Iran and Syria being joined by South Korea, the UAE, Iraq, and Lebanon in the same group, while Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, China, Oman, and Vietnam were pitted in Group B.

Dragan Skocic’s men will then play away to Iraq on September 7, in a repeat of preliminary round encounters between the old foes.

Iran responded to a 2-1 defeat against the Iraqis with a 1-0 victory in June to win Group C.

Skocic’s team will fly to the UAE on October 7 to face Bert van Marwijk’s side, before squaring off against South Korea at home five days later.

Iran has been undefeated against the South Koreans in the previous three World Cup qualification campaigns, having won three in six meetings.

The first round of matches for Iran will come to end with an away fixture against Lebanon on November 11.

The group fixtures will finish on March 29, with the top two of each group sealing a place in the final showpiece in Qatar in November next year.

The winner of a playoff tie between the two third-placed teams will advance to the intercontinental playoff.
