Iran and Sepahan’s goalkeeper Payam Niazmand put pen to a three-year contract with the Primeira Liga club Portimonense SC.
The 26-year-old shot stopper will follow in the footsteps of compatriot Alireza Beiranvand, who joined another Portuguese side Boavista from Belgian team Antwerp on loan last week.
Niazmand is set to join Portimonense following the conclusion of the Persian Gulf Pro League season, where his team Sepahan is second in the table, trailing Persepolis by two points with three games to spare.
Sepahan will also take on Foolad Khuzestan in the quarterfinals of the Hazfi Cup (Iran’s domestic cup competition), on Thursday.
Niazmand was first introduced to the Iranian football with Paykan in 2015, before signing for Sepahan in 2018.
A former keeper of the under-23 national team, Niazmand made his single appearance for Iran in a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan in a friendly last October.
Portimonense finished 14th in the Portuguese 18-team league last season.
Niazmand will be the fourth Iranian in Primeira Liga next season, joining Beirnavand, as well as Porto striker Mehdi Taremi and Maritimo’s Ali Alipour.
