Persian Gulf Pro League sides Esteghlal, Foolad Khuzestan, and Golgohar Sirjan booked their spots in the Hazfi Cup semi-finals.
In Tehran, Persepolis’s quest for a second domestic double in three years came to an end at the hands of their arch-rivals Esteghlal.
Esteghlal keeper Seyyed Hossein Hosseini saved substitute Mehdi Abdi’s spot-kick to lead his side to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Reds for the second consecutive year, after a goalless draw at the Azadi Stadium.
Persepolis striker Issa Al-e Kassir also missed his penalty, sending it above the crossbar, while Mehdi Qayedi saw his effort cleared by Reds’ keeper Hamed Lak.
Farhad Majidi’s men will face former Blues head coach Amir Qalenoei in the last-four round, when squaring off against Golgohar Sirjan.
Qalenoei’s team came from behind to beat Aluminium Arak 3-1 at home.
Having come off the bench, Reza Shekari canceled out Moein Abbasian’s 10th-minute opener in the 77th minute, before Ahamdreza Zenderouh gave home side the lead from the spot with five minutes from normal time and Saeid Sadeqi sealed the victory in the third minute of the stoppage time.
Foolad Khuzestan, meanwhile, beat Sepahan 5-4 in the shootout after Rouhollah Baqeri drew visitors level in the 107th minute, 14 minutes after Saber Hardani had broken the deadlock for Foolad.
Goalkeeper Mohsen Forouzan was the hero of the day for the hosts, saving penalties from Mohammad Mohebbi and Jalal Alimohammadi, while Foolad’s Vahid Heidariyeh’s effort hit the post.
Foolad will play the winner of the last-eight battle between Malavan Bandar Anzali and Kheybar Khorramabad.
The two second-tier sides will go head-to-head in Bandar Anzali next Thursday.
