Cuba said the new sanctions imposed by the Unites States on the country are aimed at justifying the “inhumane blockade” against the Latin American country.

The US slapped sanctions on Cuba's National Revolutionary Police (NRP) on Friday for what it calls suppressing anti-government demonstrations this month, with President Joe Biden warning additional punitive measures were in store, according to AFP.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in a Twitter message rejected the inclusion of the NRP and its directors on "spurious lists" by the US.

"These arbitrary measures add to disinformation and aggression to justify the inhumane blockade against Cuba," Rodriguez wrote, referring to Washington's embargo against Havana that has been in place since 1962.

The US Treasury named Cuba’s National Revolutionary Police Director Oscar Callejas Valcarce and Deputy Director Eddy Sierra Arias to its sanctions blacklist, which freezes any property they might have in the United States and bars US transactions with them.

The demonstrations in Cuba were staged this month amid its economic crisis since the fall of the old Soviet Union ally and a record surge in coronavirus infections.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has blamed the unrest on the US, which in recent years has tightened its decades-old trade embargo on the island. He has said many protesters were sincere but manipulated by US-orchestrated social media campaigns.
