The first day of the Greco-Roman wrestling contests of the Tokyo Olympics sees Iran’s Alireza Nejati face Armenian Armen Melikyan in the first round of the men’s 60kg weight class on Sunday.
A victory over the world under-23 champion in 2019, will send Nejati into the quarterfinal bout against either Rio 2016 bronze medalist, Elmurat Tasmuradov of Uzbekistan, or Ukrainian Lenur Temirov.
The host’s two-time world champion Kenichiro Fumita and China’s Sailike Walihan, a world bronze medalist in 2018, are in the same half of the draw with Nejati.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 130kg competitions, Amin Mirzadeh will begin his campaign agianst Kim Min-seok of South Korea, a world bronze winner in 2018.
Should Mirzadeh overcome the South Korean, he will most likely face Cuban sensation Mijain Lopez, who will be chasing a fourth consecutive Olympic gold, in the quarters.
Turkey’s Riza Kayaalp, the beaten finalist in Rio five years ago, is also in the upper side of the bracket with Mirzadeh.
