Iranian ship grounds off Russian port

An Iranian cargo ship stranded near the Russian port of Astrakhan off the Caspian Sea coast.

The Russian Federal Maritime and Maritime Organization announced that the Iranian cargo ship named "Paya" which bound for the port of Astrakhan run aground in the Volga-Caspian Canal, 155 km from its destination, IRNA reported.

The ship is reportedly damaged but no fuel leakage has been reported.

The accident did not affect traffic in the canal. The ship was carrying no cargo at the time of accident and all its crew are safe.

Russian media reported that "Paya" had departed from the Port of Amir Abad, east of the Iranian northern Mazandaran Province.

Necessary measures are underway to restore the ship from the mud.
