The freestyle contests of the Tokyo Olympics men’s wrestling get underway on Wednesday at the Japanese capital, where Iranian duo Reza Atri and Hassan Yazdani will be in action.

Atri, representing the country at the 57kg weight class, will begin his campaign against the world silver medalist in 2019, Süleyman Atli of Turkey.

The winner of the bout will face either Armenian Arsen Harutyunyan – a 2019 European gold medalist – or two-time world bronze winner Erdenebatyn Bekhbayar of Mongolia in the quarterfinals.

Two-time world champion Zaur Uguev of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) is also in the same half of the draw with Atri.

Meanwhile, in the 86kg competitions, Iranian sensation Yazdani will start his quest for a second consecutive Olympic gold with a battle against Uzbekistan’s Javrail Shapiev.

A victory will send Yazdani into the last-eight bout against the winner of the clash between the 2019 world bronze medalist Stefan Reichmuth of Switzerland and Algerian Fateh Benferdjallah.

ROC’s Artur Naifonov, who won the bronze in the 2019 World Championships, is in the same bracket with Yazdani, while David Taylor was pitted in the other half of the draw, meaning Yazdani will have the chance to beat the American at the third time of asking in the final showpiece.
