Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi issued a directive calling on governor generals to implement the necessary measures lest the Lambda variant of the coronavirus enters the country.
Babak Dinparast, the secretary of the National Task Force for Fighting the Coronavirus, added the directive particularly calls on related authorities in border provinces and health organizations to take the required protective measures, IRNA reported.
He noted that in addition, the interior minister stressed the importance of intensifying control and supervision over entries into the country through border crossings, airports, terminals, ports, free zones, joint border markets as well as land and sea borders.
The World Health Organization classifies Lambda as a “variant of interest”, which was first identified in Peru in December, as laboratory studies showed it has mutations that resist vaccine-induced antibodies, according to Reuters.
