Deputy Head of Iran Customs Administration Mehrdad Jamali said on Friday the organization took delivery of the biggest COVID-19 vaccine consignment that the country has so far imported since the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020.

Jamali said the consignment, which is the 44th shipment of COVID-19 vaccine to the country, includes over 4,600,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine, according to IRNA.

He added that the consignment consists of 238 palettes weighing 73 tons.

In addition to producing domestic vaccines, the Islamic Republic has imported consignments of vaccines from several foreign suppliers amid the illegal US sanctions that have seriously hampered the country’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The US sanctions have created obstacles to the delivery of pharmaceutical and vital products including vaccines to Iran.

Iran has so far administered more than 19 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines. Nearly nine million people have so far received two shots.

According to the latest figures, 5,083,133 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Iran and 109,459 people have died.

Iran’s Health Ministry said on Friday that 561 COVID-19 patients lost their lives from Thursday to Friday. The ministry also reported 27,621 new positive cases across the country during the same period.
