The Iranian foreign and energy ministers discussed ways to expand relations and cooperation with the country’s northern neighbors.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian held talks on the issue at a meeting on Tuesday, also attended by members of other related public organizations as well as Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, IRNA reported.

Participants in this meeting also put forward their proposals concerning Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi’s participation in the upcoming Summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of Heads of State in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on September 16 and 17.

The latest developments in Iran’s relations with its northern neighbors was the other debated topic.

Since taking office, the new Iranian administration has frequently stressed that developing relations with neighbors and Asian states are among its top priorities.

In remarks in late July, Raeisi said increasing interactions as well as holding dialogue and consultations with neighbors is a diplomatic priority of his administration.

Reiterating the same issue in late August, Amir-Abdollahian tweeted that his main foreign policy priority is improving ties with neighboring as well as Asian countries.

The foreign minister also underlined that he is intent on pursuing a balanced, dynamic and smart foreign policy based on the principles of mutual respect, wisdom and expediency.
