The 15th Asian Film Awards in South Korea announced the nominees, with four nominations for two Iranian films, ‘The Wasteland,’ and ‘Sun Children’.

Iran’s ‘The Wasteland,’ directed by Ahmad Bahrami, won the nominations for Best New Director Award and Best Cinematography Award (for Masoud Amini-Tirani).

“A remote brick manufacturing factory uses an ancient method for brick production. Many families from different ethnicities work in the factory. The boss at the factory seems to hold the key to solving the workers’ problems. Lotfollah, 40, who has been born on-site, is the factory’s supervisor and acts as an intermediary between the workers and the boss,” reads the synopsis of the film.

“Lotfollah gathers all the workers in front of his office to talk to them about the closure of the factory. All that matters to him now is to keep Sarvar, the woman he has been in love with for a long time, unharmed.”

‘The Wasteland’ has been screened at the 2020 annual Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan and the 2020 Stockholm International Film Festival in Sweden. It won the Best Film Award at the competition section of the 13th Subversive Film Festival in Croatia.

Majid Majidi’s ‘Sun Children’ also received two nominations for Best Newcomer Award (for actor Ruhollah Zamani) and Best Editing Award (for Hassan Hassandoust).

Majidi’s film tells the story of 12-year-old Ali and his three friends. Together, they work hard to survive and support their families, doing small jobs in a garage and committing petty crimes to make fast money. Everything changes, however, when Ali is entrusted to find a hidden treasure underground but must first enroll at the Sun School, a charitable institution that tries to educate street kids and child laborers.

The movie had its Iranian premiere during the 38th Fajr Film Festival in Tehran, garnering the Crystal Simorghs for best film, script and set design.

Numerous international events, including the 77th Venice Film Festival, have screened the movie. The festival honored the film’s star Zamani with the Marcello Mastroianni Award.

15th Asian Film Awards will present 16 awards recognizing artistic and technical achievements in Asian cinema, and two Japanese films, ‘Wife of a Spy,’ directed by Kurosawa Kiyoshi and ‘Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy’ by Hamaguchi Ryusuke, along with China’s ‘One Second,’ South Korea’s ‘The Book of Fish’ and India’s ‘The Disciple’ are competing for this year’s Best Film Award.

In 2020, the 14th Asian Film Awards moved to Busan, South Korea for the first time and were held online due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year, AFA15 will be held again in conjunction with the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the winners will be announced and presented with awards on October 8. The ceremony will commence in a hybrid form, which combines on-site attendance in Busan and online participation.
