President Raeisi in Tajikistan for SCO summit

President Ebrahim Raeisi of Iran arrived in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Thursday to take part in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held on September 16-17.

President Raeisi is in Tajikistan upon an official invitation by his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon to participate in and address the SCO summit.

Upon his arrival in Dushnabe, President Raeisi was welcomed by Tajikistan's prime minister at the airport, IRNA reported.

In his address to the SCO summit, President Raeisi is to push for permanent membership of Iran in the SCO.

Iran has an obsever status of the SCO since 2005.

Tajikistan, the rotating chair of the SCO this year, as well as SCO’s key member states China and Russia have backed Iran’s bid for joining the alliance.

SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, originally formed by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, June 15, 2001 in Shanghai.

The alliance is the largest regional organization in the world in terms of geographical coverage and population, covering three-fifths of the Eurasian continent and nearly half of the human population.

On the sidelines of the two-day SCO summit, the Iranian president is to hold separate meetings with leaders and heads of delegations from other participating countries.

Ministers of foreign affairs, energy, labor, cultural heritage, and justice accompany the president during the visit.

President Raeisi will have a bilateral meeting with the Tajik President after the summit and high-ranking delegations from Iran and Tajikistan will discuss the expansion of bilateral ties.

Speaking prior to his departure from Tehran, the Iranian president said that regional cooperation is a "top priority" for the Tehran.

Addressing Iranians in a live televised remarks at the airport, President Raeisi said he is to present Tehran’s position on different regional developments at the 21st meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State.
