The project to renovate the ancient caravanserai of the city of Sarayan in the northeastern province of South Khorasan has been completed, said the deputy head of the province’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department for cultural heritage affairs.

Ali Shariatimanesh added that the old caravanserai, dating back to the Safavid Era (1501-1736), is situated in the historical part of the city.

He noted that the ancient monument includes an entrance porch, a courtyard, a stable, a wooden door and several rooms.

Shariatimanesh said that Sarayan Caravanserai is located in a historical complex consisting of a mosque, an ancient bathhouse with a stone inscription dating back to 1544, an ab anbar (a traditional reservoir for drinking water), with an inscription dating back to 1667, and an old bazaar.

“The restoration of Sarayan Caravanserai, nominated for registration on UNESCO’s Heritage List, began in 2005,” he noted.

Mohammad Arab, head of Sarayan’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department, said that the global registration of such historical monuments could contribute to their preservation and lead to economic prosperity of the region by attracting more tourists.

Sarayan Caravanserai is one of the oldest tourist attractions of the city, which is still in use.

In today´s modern world, traveling is one of the easiest activities. You only need to reserve your ticket and accommodation with just a few clicks.

But the truth is that traveling hasn’t always been so easy. In the past, travelers had to cross the roads for days to reach their destinations and, thus, they needed roadside inns to rest and recover.

Caravanserais are the cultural and historical monuments built along the routes of caravans by the rulers or benevolent people in the past.

Travelers — or in fact caravanners — who had to take long journeys, needed such places for recuperation to get ready for the rest of their trip.

That’s why you can see plenty of old caravanserais along the most important routes of the ancient world.
