Iran’s globetrotting ‘The Recess’ to be screened in Spain, Turkey, US

The Iranian short film, ‘The Recess,’ written, directed, and produced by Navid Nikkhah-Azad, will be screened at Spain, Turkey and US festivals.

The 12-minute film, with its Spanish title, ‘El Recreo,’ will be screened at the Competition Section of the 18th Festival Internacional de Cine Social de Castilla-la Mancha, known as FECISO, in Toledo, Spain. The Spanish festival started on October 1 and will run through December 14, according to IRNA.

The festival focuses on various themes of generational conflict, child labor, domestic violence, social roles, ecology, children’s rights, and coexistence.

The 15th Crossroads International Short Film Festival in Istanbul will host the film until October 16.

The Turkish festival, which has been on the theme of “Intercultural Dialogue and Migration” for many years, is taking place on the theme of “Gender Equality” this year, which is the fifth target of UNDP.

In the US, Nikkhah-Azad’s film will be screened at the 18th Progeny Short Film Festival, to be held in Virginia on October 2, and the 14th Chesapeake Film Festival, due to be held in Maryland from October 2 to 10.

Progeny seeks to uplift filmmakers producing thought-provoking content showcasing a diverse range of styles, genres, and interests.

It is the mission of the Chesapeake Film Festival to enrich, entertain, educate and inspire by bringing the finest in environmental, narrative, documentary and short films to the Chesapeake Bay community and to the world.

The short film is the story of a 17-year-old school-girl who runs away from school to watch the football match of her beloved club.

Sahar, along with three of her friends, is planning to leave the school during the break in order to watch the match between Esteghlal FC and Al Ain FC at Azadi Sports Complex.

Mozhan Kordi, Reyhaneh Naieean, Niloufar Shokouhinia, and Ghazal Khalili are among the cast.

The film has participated in over 40 international festivals including the 13th edition of the Sofia MENAR Film Festival (SMFF) in Bulgaria.

It has won many awards including the Best Short Film Award at the Oxford Film Festival (OxFilm) in Mississippi, the Best Dramatic Short Film award at the 15th San Francisco Frozen Film Festival, and the Best Short Film Award at the Johns Hopkins Film Festival, and the IndieFEST Film Awards, all held in the United States, plus the Best Performance Award at the 33rd Living Skies Student Film Festival in Canada.
