A historic campaign saw Iran’s women’s team finish third at the 2021 World Youth Weightlifting Championships in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Iran, making its debut in the women’s contests, snatched two silvers and bronzes apiece and collected 405 points to stand behind USA (655 points) and Russia (507 points).

Ghazaleh Hosseini made history by grabbing a first-ever medal for the country in the event when she lifted 94kg to take the clean & jerk bronze in the -59kg contests.

Yekta Jamali, meanwhile, finished her impressive campaign with three medals in the -81kg category.

Jamali’s best lift of 90kg handed her a snatch bronze, before the Iranian – a triple world junior bronze medalist in May – overcame the 115kg weight for the clean & jerk silver.

Jamali also bagged the total silver with 205kg – three kilograms adrift of Georgian gold winner Natia Gadelia.

In the men’s event, Alireza Abbaspour made a clean sweep of the -81kg golds, while Amir-Reza Mohammadinia claimed the snatch and total silvers of the +102kg class as Iran finished fifth with 349 points.

Russia, USA, Saudi Arabia and Turkey stood first to fourth respectively.
