Iran: Lifting US ‘cruel’ sanctions on agenda of meeting with EU envoy

Iran said on Wednesday the removal of US “cruel” sanctions is high on the agenda of talks with European External Action Service (EEAS) Deputy Secretary General Enrique Mora during his visit to Tehran.

“Exchanging views on bilateral & regional issues including Afghanistan, as well as talks on removal of cruel sanctions are on the agenda,” Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri Kani said in a Twitter post.

Baqeri Kani added that Mora’s visit on Thursday is “in line with recent regional and international consultations”.

The trip comes as Tehran is preparing to resume talks “soon” with world powers on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal in Vienna which stalled in June after six rounds before Iran’s presidential election.

Baqeri Kani is expected to lead Iran’s new negotiating team, replacing Seyyed Abbas Araqchi.

France said on Wednesday that the visit of the European Union’s political director is vital to the future of the Vienna talks and takes place “at a critical moment”.

The negotiations are aimed at bringing the United States back to compliance with the nuclear deal, to which France, Germany, Britain China and Russia are parties. Former US president Donald Trump left the deal in 2018 and reimposed and reinforced sanctions on Iran.

Iran wants the US to lift all sanctions imposed by Trump effectively and verifiably before rejoining the pact.
