Floods force Indian couple to float to their wedding in a cooking pot
Indian bride and groom arrive for their wedding in unusual style after sailing through the flooded streets of their town in a cooking pot in Kerala, India.

When floods hit southern India, it looked as though a young couple would be unable to make their wedding. But they managed to reach the temple by floating through the flooded streets in a giant metal cooking pot, Reuters reported.

The couple, identified by local media as health workers in the town of Alappuzha in India's southern state of Kerala, could be seen in the video footage smiling and waving in their ceremonial clothes, as two men waded through hip-high waters to steer their pot to the temple.

They were married in a Hindu ritual with only a small number of guests, while brown water lapped up at the edge of the building.

“People from the temple arranged the pot for us,” the groom, Akash Kunjumon, 26, explained in a telephone interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday, adding that they had been unable to locate a boat.

“There was a brother who had helped with everything. He told us that there is no other way but to use the pot,” Kunjumon said.

So, dressed in their colorful wedding attire, they climbed into the pot – known as a chembu in Malayalam, a regional language.

“We traveled in that pot for at least 20 minutes to get to the venue,” the groom said, praising those who helped them navigate the waters, which had “a strong undercurrent.”

“My father swam to the temple and my mother, grandmother and sisters used another pot,” Kunjumon said. “The photographer had to struggle. But he knew the story and was ready to take the risk.”

Admitting that their wedding day was a little “strange,” and that she had been “disheartened” by her family’s absence, the bride, Aishwarya, said the pair “never expected such a reaction” to their unconventional start to married life. “Everyone was thrilled,” she said.

“With God’s grace, we got married.”

Rains across Kerala have triggered flash floods and landslides in several areas. Kerala suffered its worst floods in a century in 2018.
