Navy commander: Iran to make new submarines

Iran plans to produce new homegrown submarines, announced the navy commander.

The country has made complicated naval equipment relying on domestic capabilities, added Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, in a radio interview on Wednesday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

Commenting on the homemade submarines that are currently being operated by the Iranian Navy, the commander said the new ones will be produced in the near future.

Unveiling plans for the production of heavy destroyers, Rear Admiral Irani said a number of Jamaran- and Sahand-class destroyers are currently under construction.

Iran has so far manufactured different classes of advanced homemade submarines including Qadir, Qaem, Nahang, Tareq and Sina.

In a meeting with navy commanders in November 2018, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei praised the “great and fabulous” advances made by Iranian military forces, in particular those of the navy, since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He said the Iranian Navy’s success in producing homemade vessels, such as the Sahand destroyer or Fateh and Qadir submarines, heralds more progress in the near future.
