Farhadi’s ‘A Hero’ heading for Oscars 2022

The Iranian film ‘A Hero,’ directed by two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi will represent Iran at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony slated for March 27, 2022.

The 127-minute film was picked by Iran’s Farabi Cinema Foundation that is in charge of submissions for the Academy Awards, said a spokesperson of the foundation on Saturday.

This is the fifth time Farhadi is representing Iran at the Oscars. He has already won the Oscars twice for A Separation and The Salesman in 2012 and 2017 respectively, IRNA reported.

In its first international debut, ‘A Hero’ won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix award, jointly with ‘Compartment No. 6,’ Juho Kuosmanen’s follow-up to his debut, ‘The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.’

The film has also recently been invited to the 45th Sao Paulo International Film Festival (Mostra) in Brazil, the Toronto Film Festival in Canada, the Sarajevo Film Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Melbourne Film Festival in Australia, New Horizons Film Festival in Poland, and the Miami Gems section of the 39th edition of the Miami Film Festival in Florida, the US.

According to IMDB, ‘A Hero’ is the story of Rahim who is in prison because of a debt he was unable to pay. During a two-day leave, he tries to convince his creditor to withdraw his complaint against the payment of part of the sum. But things don’t go as planned.

Amir Jadidi, Mohsen Tanabandeh, Fereshteh Sadr-Orafai and Sarina Farhadi starred in the drama.

Farhadi produced the film together with Alexandre Mallet-Guy of Memento Films International.

A Hero has also been screened at the 69th edition of the BFI London Film Festival in the UK.
