Iranian health minister regretted that over 85 percent of the patients dying of COVID-19 in the country have not been vaccinated against the disease.

Speaking on Sunday, Bahram Einollahi said the ministry is monitoring all those who receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the country, IRNA reported.

He added that those who have not been vaccinated yet are the main source of concerns for the start of a potential sixth wave of the COVID-19 infections in the country.

Einollahi said the immunity developed in the body after receiving the COVID-19 jab helps prevent death by 100 percent in those who catch the virus.

He added the Iranian Health Ministry managed to, in cooperation with the people, vaccinate over 70 percent of the country’s target population against COVID-19 in close to 80 days.

Iran’s public vaccination has gained greater momentum over the past few months on the back of the rise in imports and domestic production of vaccines.

The country has received several COVID-19 vaccine batches from Russia (Sputnik V), China (Sinopharm), Japan (AstraZeneca) and India (COVAXIN), and has also developed a number of COVID jabs domestically.

According to a statement by the Health Ministry on Sunday, 80,406,788 doses of COVID-19 jabs have so far been administered in the country, of which 872,969 doses were given to people during the past 24-hours.

It added 50,843,578 people have been given the first dose and 29,503,783 have received their second one.

Casualties

The Iranian Health Ministry announced in its Sunday that the country’s daily COVID-19 deaths and infections reached 171 and 9,174, respectively, in the past 24 hours.

Total COVID-19 death toll and infections since the beginning of the outbreak in the country in late February 2020 stand at 125,223 and 5,860,844, respectively.

According to the ministry, 4,294 COVID-19 patients are in critical condition, and of the newly-detected cases, 1,237 individuals have been hospitalized.

Some 5,416,691 COVID-19 patients have so far either recovered from the disease or have been discharged from hospitals.

So far, 34,765,163 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in the country.

The Health Ministry also said 16 cities are coded red (very high-risk), while 119 are in the orange zone (high-risk).

The number of the country’s yellow (medium-risk) and blue (low-risk) cities are 227 and 86, respectively, read the statement.
