Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun scored his first league goals in two months as Zenit St. Petersburg thrashed Spartak Moscow 7-1 at home on Sunday.

The Iranian international opened the account for the Russian champion in the 20th minute with a towering header on the far post, before netting Zenit’s third of the night in similar fashion 16 minutes later.

Andrei Mostovoy bagged a brace, with Brazilian Claudinho, as well as substitutes Artem Dzyuba and Aleksandr Yerokhin also getting on the score sheet for Zenit.

Dutch winger Quincy Promes scored a consolation for the visitors.

Azmoun’s double rounded off a perfect weekend for the Iranian strike force playing in Europe, after Mehdi Taremi had scored a hat-trick to help Porto to a 3-1 victory over Tondela at the Portugal’s Primeira Liga on the preceding night.

The goals also saw the Iranian, who last found the net in a 1-0 victory over CSKA Moscow in late August, move up to second in the Russian league’s top scorers’ chart with seven goals – alongside Lokomotiv Moscow’s Fyodor Smolov – trailing Ufa’s Gamid Agalarov by three.

The victory kept Zenit on top of the Russian league with 26 points, three points clear of nearest rivals Dynamo Moscow and CSKA Moscow.
