President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi on Monday called on Europe not to capitulate under US pressure, as he received the credentials of the new Swiss ambassador to Tehran.

Raeisi told Christian Dussey that Switzerland, which represents the interests of the United States in Iran, should play a more influential role in confronting Washington’s unilateralism.

“Switzerland has always played a positive role in the establishment and promotion of peace. We expect the country to maintain its independent role in the face of unilateral US policies,” Raeisi said.

He added Switzerland and other European countries must not be influenced by the United States’ pressure, in an apparent reference to Washington’s anti-Iran policies that also target third-party countries cooperating with Iran, Press TV reported.

The Swiss diplomat described Iran as a country with an ancient and brilliant civilization.

“Iran and Switzerland have had good relations in political, cultural, economic, and scientific fields for more than a hundred years,” Dussey noted.

He expressed hope that Swiss companies and businesses would continue to operate in Iran.

Former US president Donald Trump left the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, officially known as the JCPOA, in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions as part of his “maximum pressure” campaign.

Iran has been critical of the failure of European JCPAO parties – France, Britain and Germany – to stand against US unilateralism and keep their part of the bargain.

Warning against US influence

The president also received the credentials of serval other countries’ envoys, including Belgium’s new Ambassador Gianmarco Rizzo.

Deploring European parties’ inaction, Raeisi cautioned against the approaches that could give the US the perception that Europe belongs to its sphere of influence.

Although Iran has always honored its commitments, the European parties have failed to fulfill their obligations under the JCPOA, Raeisi said, according to Tasnim News Agency.

“Regarding the JCPOA or other issues, the European countries should not act in such a way that the US would feel that Europe is in its sphere of influence,” the president added.

He blasted the US for the attempts to impose its “cruel will” on the world and said other nations should not allow Washington’s unilateralism and encroachment in different parts of the world to continue.

Raeisi also highlighted the friendly relations between Tehran and Brussels, voiced Iran’s willingness to promote economic and trade cooperation with Belgium, and stressed that outsiders should be prevented from affecting bilateral ties.

Rizzo expressed hope for the expansion of relations between Belgium and Tehran as well as their economic interaction.
