The Sri Lankan ambassador to Tehran highlighted strengthening the tourism ties between Iran and Sri Lanka.

G.M.V. Wishwanath Aponsu made the remarks on the sidelines of the Tourism Promotion 2021 “Destination Sri Lanka” which was held in Sri Lanka Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday.

The envoy told Iran Daily reporter that tourism is a good way to increase people to people contacts and to know Sri Lankan and Iranian peoples, adding that it will be fruitful for both countries’ relations too.

“Over millions of Iranian nationals have traveled out of the country per year but only 1,000 Iranian nationals have travelled to Sri Lanka per year. In this scenario, at least one percent of the Iranian tourists should be promoted to visit in Sri Lanka,” he said in a speech to open the event.

“I take this opportunity to make humble request from Iranian travel agents and tour operators to support the tourism plan of our embassy that expects at least 10,000 Iranian tourists per year to Sri Lanka. To achieve this, we are in the process of building new alliances, identifying new tools and utilizing bilateral mechanism in coordination with all stakeholders.”

Sri Lanka was recently ranked amongst the top five “Wellness Tourism” destinations in the World by the Global Wellness Institute and has also ranked among the world’s favorite destinations for travelers according to the Conde Nest 2021 Readers Choice Awards, he added.

Aponsu also expressed the hope that tourism events will provide more information to strengthen the existing tourism relations between Sri Lanka and Iran.

The objective of the event was discussing existing issues in the tourism sector between the two countries and a way forward to expand the bilateral tourism ties, reads an embassy invitation letter.

Representatives of the associations of air transport and tourist agencies, leading travel agents and tour operators, key media personnel, airline representatives, and prominent businessmen took part in the “Destination Sri Lanka” tourism promotion program.

His Excellency Aponsu took part in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily in which he stressed the role of tourism in promotion of bilateral relations. It will be published in the coming issues.
