SCFR chief: Resistance front to back Taliban if independent, inclusive gov’t formed

If the Taliban show during their governance that they will uphold the rights of all Afghan ethnicities and minority groups, maintain the country’s sovereignty, and prevent infiltration by foreigners, the resistance front will support them.

The remarks were made by Kamal Kharrazi, the head of the Islamic Republic’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations (SCFR), IRNA reported.

He added it is still soon to comment on Taliban’s move as the group’s previous behavior on different occasions, namely, the killing of members of different Afghan ethnicities, invading Iran’s Consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, and assassinating the country’s diplomats despite the assurances given by their leaders and the Pakistani government to Iranian officials, will never be forgotten.

The Taliban took power in Afghanistan in mid-August as the US was in the middle of an irresponsible and chaotic troop withdrawal from the country. They announced the formation of a caretaker government on September 7.

Commenting on Iranians’ resistance during the eight-year (1980-88) Iraqi-imposed war, Kharrazi, a former foreign minister, added that the unity among the country’s people in that war indicated that when a nation defends its aspirations as a part of its religious responsibility, it possesses such a great power that it can defeat the most-equipped regional armies.

He said, “We named our defense during the Iraqi-imposed war as the ‘Sacred Defense’ as our people defended their revolution and country based on their religious beliefs. This precious experience impacted other countries, leading to the formation of resistance in some of them.”

Praising the role played by the martyred top Iranian anti-terror commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, in providing resistance groups in Muslim countries with support, Kharrazi noted that, at present, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Hamas resistance movement in Palestine, Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) – also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi – in Iraq, the popular resistance groups in Syria and the Houthi Ansarullah movement in Yemen play an important role in the fight against aggressors and foreign hegemony.

Lieutenant General Soleimani, along with deputy commander of Hashd al-Sha’abi Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, was assassinated by a US drone-strike in Baghdad on January 3.

“The Hezbollah resistance movement has managed to protect Lebanon in the face of Israel’s aggressions, and the Islamic Resistance Movement in Palestine has doomed the Israeli forces’ bids to achieve their aggressive targets to failure. The popular resistance in Syria has defeated terrorist groups in the country. Hashd al-Sha’abi, in addition to achieving victory against Daesh, has forced American forces to leave Iraq. Yemen’s Ansarullah has made bids by the Saudi-led coalition ineffective concurrent with making strategic advances in the country.”
