Iran, Belarus FMs discuss stranded Iranians situation at Belarus-Lithuania border

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a phone call on Tuesday to his counterpart from Belarus Vladimir Makei discussed the situation of a group of the Iranian nationals facing trouble on the border between Belarus and Lithuania.

Expressing serious concern over the situation of the stranded Iranians, Amir-Abdolhian asked for humanitarian cooperation of the consulate and border authorities of Belarus to locate the Iranian nationals, provide them with medical care, and help the Iranian Embassy in Minsk facilitate their return to Iran.

A group of 13 Iranian citizen, including 10 women and three men, have been stranded on Belarus-Lithuanian border for several days, Press TV reported.

The spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that Iran’s ambassador to Minsk managed to talk on the phone to one of the stranded Iranians and that a team from the embassy was sent to the Belarus-Lithuania border to pave the way for the returning of the Iranians to their country.

More in his talks to the Belarusian FM, Amir-Abdollahian referred to the “concerning news” lately published in cyberspace about the situation of the Iranian nationals and called on the Eaurpoean country’s authorities, especially its border guards, to help locate and assist the Iranians citizens.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister, for his part, briefed amri-Abdollahian on the latest measures taken by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry to find the Iranian nationals, emphasizing that Minsk is seriously prepared to provide maximum assistance to the stranded Iranians and to continue close contacts with the Iranian Embassy to this end, Mehr News Agency wrote.

Noting that more information was needed on the whereabouts of the Iranian nationals, Foreign Minsiter Maki stressed that he would immediately ask the relevant authorities of Belarus for any further information.

During the call, the two sides also agreed to continue consultations until the Iranian nationals are saved.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to implement the agreements reached during their recent meeting on the sidelines of the meeting of the UN General Assembly to further develop and deepen relations between the two countries.
