Iran beats Syria 3-0 at FIFA World Cup qualification

Iran’s football team edged closer to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Syria in Group A.

The first chance of an entertaining first half came Iran’s way as Sardar Azmoun latched on to a perfect through-ball by Vahid Amiri before guiding his effort home through the keeper’s legs.

The Iranians continued to press for more and were awarded a VAR penalty in the 42nd minute with Ehsan Hajsafi stepping up to double the lead, Press TV reported.

Iran’s third arrived in stunning style with a minute left on the clock as Ali Gholizadeh utilized a combination of dribbling skills and persistence to beat a number of defenders before drilling the ball home. The win means Iran remain at the top of Group A with 16 points, two clear of South Korea after six rounds.

Iran leads Group A with 16 points, followed by South Korea, Mehr News Agency wrote, adding that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) moved up to six points in the third place.

The top two teams in the group will qualify for the 2022 World Cup, while the third-placed team will advance to a playoff against the third-placed team in Group B.

The winners of the playoff will advance to an inter-confederation playoff for a berth in the World Cup
