Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi said through activating a mechanism, the world’s major powers use the environment issue as a weapon against developing countries.

The president made the remarks in an address to a meeting with Iranian elites and environmentalists on Friday, regretting that these powers, themselves, use the environment in the worst possible way, IRNA reported.

Raeisi added this is the same as the major powers’ approach toward the implementation of the international humanitarian law, where they are the biggest violators of the law but claiming to be its promoters when it comes to other countries.

He said the human community is required to be highly sensitive to the harm done to the environment.

The meeting was held to mark a move by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in late November 2015 to determine a set of general policies for the protection of the environment.

Commenting on the Leader’s policies, Raeisi said six years have elapsed since Ayatollah Khamenei set the guidelines and only 47 percent of them have been enacted, which is not convincing at all.

He called on the executive organizations to reassess their performance in this regard and improve it through collective efforts.

Raeisi also urged for greater attention to the preservation of the environment in all development projects and economic activities in the country.

The president said protecting the environment helps increase the country’s power, ensure national security and boost domestic production and is a long-term investment.

He emphasized that preserving the environment is more important than development and economic activities.

The president called on all Iranian mass media, universities and seminaries to provide sufficient and appropriate education on the preservation of the environment.

Raeisi highlighted the importance of cooperation by people and NGOs in saving the environment, urging for the need to support such efforts.
