Iran’s freestyle team scooped five medals, including two golds, at the CISM World Military Wrestling Championship in Tehran, the capital of Iran, on Sunday.

Morteza Qiasi – an Asian bronze medalist in April – outmuscled Russian Artur Badtiev (9-5) and CD Fernando of Sri Lanka (10-0), before an easy 11-0 victory over Ahmad Derky of Syria in his last bout, to win the 65kg contests, which saw five wrestlers square off in a round-robin format.

Mohammad-Hossein Mohammadian – world bronze winner in 2014 – overcame Erik Dzhioev of Russian by a 10-0 scoreline for the 97kg gold with Poland’s Radoslaw Baran taking the bronze.

In the 57kg competition, also contested by five wrestlers in a round-robin format, Iranian Ahmad Mohammad-nejad Javan fell to a 4-3 defeat against the 2020 European champion Azamat Tuskaev of Russia, but bounced back to beat Armenian Manvel Khndzrdzyan (4-3), Muhammad Amir of Pakistan (10-0), and Sri Lanka’s EMG Kathuranga (11-0) and settled for the silver.

Fariborz Babaei claimed Iran’s second silver of the afternoon, conceding a 4-1 loss to Russia’s Magomed Kurbanaliev – a world champion in 2016.

Meanwhile, Hadi Vafaeipour won the 86kg bronze, courtesy of a 10-0 victory over Tunisian Sabri Nasria.

Russia’s Artur Naifonov – who won back-to-back world bronzes either side of a third-spot finish at the Tokyo Olympics in August – beat Mher Markosyan of Armenia for the gold.

The 35th edition of the competitions runs through Wednesday, with the conclusion of Greco-Roman competitions in Tehran.
