Iran’s foreign policy priority is to bolster cooperation with neighboring countries, President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi said Saturday before departing Tehran for Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan, to attend the 15th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit.

“We prioritize cooperation with neighbors and regional countries and believe such cooperation can highly contribute to promote economic relations,” Raeisi said at Tehran’s International Mehrabad Airport.

He said Iran attaches importance to “the policy of good neighborliness” and believes that boosting cooperation and economic ties “is in the interest of regional countries”.

The president said he will hold bilateral meetings with leaders attending the ECO summit on the sidelines of the event.

Raeisi will also meet his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and other senior officials.

“We will discuss important issues including gas [import], transit and trade,” he said.

The 15th ECO Summit kicks off Sudnay.

Raeisi met ECO Secretary-General Khusrav Noziri this week in Tehran and demanded obstacles to trade exchanges among member states be removed.

He urged the organization to devise plans to exploit the potentials of the member states for development and prosperity.

The ECO is an Asian political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985 in Tehran by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey. The organization has now 10 member states and provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade and investment opportunities.
