Manager Khadijeh Qane’ announced Iran’s 16-member squad for the 2021 Women’s World Handball Championship, which started in Spain on Wednesday.
Iran will leave for the European country on Thursday – after the flight had been delayed twice – ahead of its first game in the competition on Friday against Romania in Group C, which also features three-time winners and the reigning European champion Norway and Kazakhstan.
Zeinab Bazr-Afkan, Fatemeh Khalili, Haniyeh Lak, Bahar Izadgashb, Hadiseh Norouzi, Arezou Kianiara, Maryam Yousefi, Shaqayeq Bapiri, Mina Vatanparast, Souna Bidad, Shima Zare’, Negar Zendeboudi, Haniyeh Karimi, Nouriyeh Abbasi, ElnazQassemi, and Atiyeh Shahsavari will represent the country at the event.
Iran clinched a first-ever spot at the event as one of six Asian sides by reaching the last-four of the Asian Women's Handball Championship in Amman, Jordan, in September.
The second game in the group for Iran will be against Norway on Sunday, before an encounter against Kazakhstan – a repeat of the third-place match at the Asian championship which Iran lost – the following Tuesday.
Thirty-two teams will be compete across eight groups in four venues, with final showpiece taking place in Granollers, central Catalonia, on December 19.
