Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said his participation in the 16th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) in Turkey is a favorable opportunity for expansion of relations with regional and Muslim countries.
Qalibaf made the remark prior to leaving Tehran for Istanbul on Wednesday, urging that parliamentary relations between Tehran and Ankara are in need of a boost, ICANA reported.
He added his two-day visit to Istanbul comes at the invitation of Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Mustafa Şentop, noting that during the trip the speakers of the Muslim states’ parliaments will convene to discuss Palestine’s issue as well as Afghan migrants’ influx to their countries.
Qalibaf described as important regional issues the situations in Afghanistan and Palestine.
The Parliament speaker said bilateral parliamentary ties between Iran and Turkey will also be discussed during the visit, describing the two neighbors as countries with mutual cooperation aimed at developing relations.
Currently, the preparations and arrangements are being made for finalizing the document for all-out cooperation between Iran and Turkey, Qalibaf said, stressing that the trip provides an opportunity to discuss the required collaborations and coordination to this end.
He added Iran and Turkey naturally have numerous joint opportunities for improving bilateral ties at regional and international levels.
“Based on these opportunities, the Iranian delegation is planned to hold a meeting with Turkish businessmen who have trade relations with Iran or have made investments in the country during the visit. A meeting is also scheduled to be held with Iranian traders residing in Turkey.”
Qalibaf said enhancing cooperation in the fields of trade and economy are among the topics to be discussed in the trip.
He expressed hope that the visit would help foster cooperation, particularly those in the field of interparliamentary diplomacy, among Muslim states.
Qalibaf emphasized, “We must manage to use the opportunities provided by parliamentary friendship groups to complement our foreign policy. Today, more than ever, we are in need of using this capacity to ensure regional and international security.”
The Iranian Parliament speaker is accompanied by Adel Najafzadeh, the head of Iran-Turkey Parliamentary Friendship Group; as well three members of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, namely Sara Fallahi, Ebrahim Rezaei and Abolfazl Amouei.
The 16th PUIC conference will be held in Istanbul today and tomorrow.
