Iran’s eight-month steel exports rise 22%

Iran’s major steelmakers exported 4.93 million tons of steel during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21-November 21), which was 22 percent more than the figure for the same period last year.

The producers exported over 684,000 tons of steel in the month to November 21, seven percent higher than the figure for the eighth month of the previous Iranian year, IRNA reported.

During March 21-November 21, the highest amount of steel exports was made by Khuzestan Steel Company, with 1.11 million tons, followed by Mobarakeh Steel Company, with 814,724 tons, and Esfahan Steel Company, with 766,630 tons, in the second and third ranks respectively.

Iran’s steel exports during the previous Iranian year (ending on March 20) declined 13.1 percent compared to the figure for the preceding year, data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) showed.

According to ISPA, over 2.8 million tons of steel products were also exported in the year to March 20, registering an 18% decline year-on-year.

As ISPA data indicated, the exports of steel products, intermediate steel and sponge iron all declined last year, and despite significant output growth and the demand decline in domestic construction sector, the exports of these products did not increase due to the pandemic.

According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA), Iranian steelmakers churned out 22.4 million tons of crude steel during the first 10 months of 2021, marking a 5.7 percent drop compared to the corresponding figure for 2020, which was 23.7 million tons.

Iranian smelters cast 2.2 million tons of crude steel in October, showing a 15.3 percent decrease compared to the figure for the same month of 2020, which was 2.6 million tons.

The association is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world.

Iran produced over 29 million tons of crude steel in 2020, according to figures released by WSA in January.

Based on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Vision Plan, the country’s total steel production capacity is to hit 55 million tons a year by 2025, with export figures expected to reach 10-15 million tons.

WSA members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.
