Porto’s Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi finished 2021 in emphatic fashion, sitting atop the rankings of individual performances in Primeira Liga.

Taremi, 29, bagged 20 league goals over the past 12 months – the most number of strikes throughout the calendar year by any player in the Portuguese top-flight.

The Iranian international was on the score sheet during a 3-1 victory in the Portuguese Classico against Benfica on Thursday, which saw him end an 11-game goal drought.

The goal was Taremi’s eighth in the league this season – 10th across all competitions.

Benfica’s Haris Seferovic finished second to the Iranian with 19 goals, while Sporting’s Portuguese international midfielder Pedro Goncalves and Uruguayan Darwin Nunez – playing for Benfica – shared the third spot with 17.

Taremi also registered the most number of assists (16) in the league – equal with Portuguese midfielder Rafa Sliva of Benfica – with Taremi’s teammate Otavio in the third place with 13.

Taremi’s contribution to Porto’s 2021 campaign, which has seen the Dragons sit atop the league table after an unbeaten run of 16 games, brought the Iranian the Best Striker Award in the 2021 Portugolo Awards – organized by the website, which is dedicated to the Portuguese football.
