Lyon manager Bosz eager on signing Zenit striker Azmoun

Lyon manager Peter Bosz said he hopes the French club will reach agreement with Zenit St. Petersburg over signing Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun in the January transfer window.

Azmoun, 27, has entered the final year of his contract with Zenit and the Russian champion is willing to cash in on its Iranian asset, rather than letting him leave as a free agent in the summer.

The Dutch head coach has been a long-time admirer of the Iranian international as French newspaper L'Équipe first reported in August that the two clubs were on the verge of agreeing a €15 million deal for the striker.

When asked if Azmoun would seal a move to France in January, Bosz, speaking after Lyon’s 1-1 draw against PSG in Ligue 1 on Sunday, said, “I hope that will be done (laughs). We do not know.

“It does not depend on me. It remains to be seen whether OL will succeed in convincing the Russian club to let go of the Iranian in the coming weeks,” added the Dutch tactician.

However, Lyon may face competition from oil-rich club Newcastle United in landing a deal for Azmoun.

The Daily Mail reported last week that The Magpies – who are in race to avoid Premier League relegation – have made fresh enquiries for the prolific striker and could hijack his move to Lyon.

Azmoun has bagged 10 goals across all competitions for Zenit this season, including Champions League strikes against Juventus and Chelsea.
