Father of modern Persian poetry Nima Yooshij commemorated in northern Iran

A group of Iranian poets and researchers held the 627th cultural meeting of Bukhara Nights in Sari, capital city of Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran, to honor the 62nd death anniversary of father of modern Persian poetry Nima Yooshij.

The event was organized by Bukhara Magazine, the Persian-language cultural journal, and in cooperation with Sari Artists’ House and the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults in Mazandaran Province, IRNA wrote.

Several renowned poets and researchers including Ali Dehbashi, chief editor of Bukhara Magazine, Ghafran Badakhshani, prominent Afghan poet, Bijan Honarikar, researcher and author, Asadollah Emadi, writer and poet, Mansour Ali-Asghari, researcher and poet, and Batool Aqamiri, literature researcher participated in the event and made speeches on Yooshij and his poems.

This is the second time the northern province hosted the event. It had previously hosted the event under the title of ‘Night of Anousheh Mazandaranology Foundation’ at the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology.  

Ali-Asghari pointed to Nima’s social concerns, noting that Nima gave importance to awakening, because he allocated 52 couplets to this issue.

The residence of Nima turned into the Museum of Modern Iranian Poetry, which opened on November 13.

Known as the father of modern Persian poetry, Yooshij was born Ali Esfandiari. He gained great acclaim for making Iranian verse more accessible and freer in form and subject matter.

Born on November 11, 1897 in Yoosh, a village in Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran, Nima rose to fame because of ushering in a movement in Persian poetry called ‘She’r-e No’ or ‘New Poetry’.

Nima died of pneumonia at his house in Tehran on January 3, 1960. This famous poet was laid to rest in Yoosh.
