Iran, E3 meet in Vienna as expert-level talks on JCPOA continue

Senior diplomats from Iran and the three European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal met in Vienna on Wednesday as two working groups discussed the removal of US sanctions and the rollback of Iran’s nuclear steps.

The meeting between Iran’s chief negotiator Ali Baqeri Kani and his French, British and German counterparts came as part of intense negotiations for the revival of the tattered deal, known as the JCPOA, to which Russia and China are also parties.

In their eighth round, the talks are aimed at bringing the United States back to compliance with the JCPOA and lifting the sanctions Washington reimposed on Iran after unilaterally withdrawing from the deal in 2018.

Enrique Mora, the European Union’s political director who chairs and mediates the talks, met Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov in Vienna.

Mora described the meeting as “very interesting” during which he discussed the JCPOA revival talks among other issues.

Thus far, during the eighth round, two expert-level meetings have been held on executing arrangements for a possible agreement.

All delegations acknowledge that progress has been made in the talks and that negotiations are moving forward.

Iran has time and again said that a “good agreement” can be reached as soon as possible if only the West demonstrates enough willpower.

Striking a deal appears to be unlikely during the current round, according to IRNA.
