Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi expressed condolences on the death of the UAE’s former president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, who was elected as president on Saturday, as well as to the Emirati government and people.
In a message addressed to new President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Saturday, Raeisi expressed hope that God would have mercy on Sheikh Khalifa’s soul, saying he was deeply saddened by the tragic news, president.ir reported.
The Iranian president also prayed to God to give patience to Sheikh Khalifa’s family.
Sheikh Khalifa died on Friday at the age of 73 after years of battling against illness. He had long ceased being involved in day-to-day affairs.
Sheikh Khalifa was born in 1948. He took over as the UAE’s second president in November 2004, succeeding his father as the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, the federation’s richest emirate.
The UAE’s Federal Supreme Council on Saturday elected Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed as the president of the UAE, according to the state-run WAM news agency.
In addition, in a message to his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian offered condolences to “the brotherly and friendly government and people of the United Arab Emirates” on Sheikh Khalifa’s passing.
