Iran’s Third National Tourism Festival will be held in the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan in the second half of the current Iranian year (started March 21), said Jalil Jabbari, director general of the provincial chapter of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization.

He added that the first and second editions of the festival were held in the Iranian calendar years of 1397 (which ended in March 2019) and 1398 (which ended in March 2020) respectively, yjc.news reported.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the event has been suspended for the past two Iranian years.

The official added that those involved in the activities related to tourism sector, tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, investors, hospitals providing healthcare services to medical tourists, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and eco lodge owners would participate in the festival.

Jabbari continued that foreign individuals, who are active in the tourism sectors of neighboring countries, would also be invited to the festival in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Seventh National Handicrafts Festival is scheduled to be held in Urmia, the capital city of West Azarbaijan Province, concurrent with the festival,” he said.

Several other events are planned to be held in province to promote the rich cultural and tourism potentials of the region.

He noted that more than 50 international, national, provincial and local festivals would be held in various cities of the province by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2023), including International Carpet Festival in Khoy, Takht-e Soleyman Festival in Takab, Hasanlu Gold Bowl Festival in Naqadeh and Cherry Festival in Oshnavieh.

West Azarbaijan Province is a wonderful land with high mountains bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iraq. Lake Urmia, one of the saltiest lakes of the world, is located in the province and contains many islands which are the habitats of various  kinds of local and migrating birds.
