Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi congratulated Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on his election as the new president of the UAE, expressing hope that bilateral relations would continue to expand under his leadership.

Raeisi made the remarks in a Monday message addressed to Sheikh Mohamed, president.ir reported.

The Iranian president said the foundation of relations between Iran and the UAE was laid during the rule of former president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He expressed hope that during Sheikh Mohamed’s term, bilateral ties would further develop and deepen in all fields in line with the two sides’ interests through joint efforts, and in view of the new Emirati president’s prudence and discernment.

Raeisi on Saturday condoled with Sheikh Mohamed as well as the Emirati government and people for Sheikh Khalifa’s death.

He expressed hope that God would have mercy on Sheikh Khalifa’s soul, saying he was deeply saddened by the tragic news.

Sheikh Khalifa died on Friday at the age of 73 after years of battling against illness. He had long ceased being involved in day-to-day affairs.

Born in 1948, he took over as the UAE’s second president in November 2004, succeeding his father as the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, the federation’s richest emirate.

The UAE’s Federal Supreme Council on Saturday elected Sheikh Mohamed, Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, as the president of the UAE, according to the state-run WAM news agency.
