Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi will spend at least another season at the newly-crowned Portuguese champion Porto, according to a Saturday report by Lisbon-based newspaper A Bola.
Having finished as the club’s top scorer in the Primeira Liga with 20 strikes – second to Benfica’s Darwin Nunez in the league – the Iranian talisman will have the chance to celebrate a domestic double with the Dragons, when squaring off against Tondela in the Taça de Portugal final today.
An impressive couple of seasons with Porto has seen Taremi catch the eyes of a number European heavyweights, including Milan, as well as London archrivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in recent transfer windows.
Some high-profile players, namely Manchester United’s Brazilian fullback Alex Telles, Sevilla’s Jesús Manuel Corona, and, most recently, Colombian Luis Diaz, who joined Liverpool in January, left Porto in recent years in pursue of a new chapter in the careers and more lucrative contracts.
However, A Bola reported that the 29-year-old Iranian has no intention of following in the footsteps of his former teammates and might be willing to see off his contract at the club, which runs until the summer of 2024.
Porto’s marquee striker bagged 23 goals – as well as 18 assists – across all competitions in his first season for the club, including a sensational overhead kick against eventual champion Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals which earned him a FIFA Puskás Award nomination.
