Porto striker Mehdi Taremi capped off a glorious season in style by scoring twice to help newly-crowned Primeira Liga champion beat Tondela 3-1 at the Taça de Portugal final and complete a domestic double.
The Iranian wrong-footed Babacar Niasse from the spot to open the scoring for the Dragons midway through the first half.
Vitor Ferreira doubled Porto’s lead seven minutes after the break but Taremi was unfortunate to see his second spot kick hit the woodwork in the 66th minute – seven minutes before Neto Borges pulled one back for Tondela with a sublime header.
It took Taremi just over 60 seconds to restore a two-goal cushion as Porto went on to celebrate a ninth league and cup double in the history of the club, while the prolific striker picked up the Man-of-the-Match Award.
Porto head coach Sergio Conceicao and players celebrate the lifting of the trophy after beating Tondela in the Portuguese Cup final in Alges, Portugal, on May 22, 2022.
The final whistle in Alges’ Jamor National Sports Center brought the curtain down on a most successful campaign in three seasons at the Portuguese football for Taremi, who topped the goal and assist charts for Porto by bagging 26 strikes in 48 outings across all competitions, while providing his teammates with 17 assists.
The Iranian finished as Primeira Liga’s second top scorer with 20 goals – trailing Benfica’s Uruguayan talisman Darwin Nunez by six.
An 18th cup triumph saw Sergio Conceicao’s men, who won the league with a record-breaking 91 points, overtake Sporting in the winners' list, with Benfica on top on 26.
