Former Bundesliga head coach Alex Nouri has emerged as a prime candidate to take over at Iranian club Esteghlal, according to Varzesh3, as the Persian Gulf Pro League champion desperately looks to replace Farhad Majidi.
Majidi parted ways with the Tehran-based club to join Emirati side Ittihad Kalba after steering the Blues through a remarkable unbeaten season, which brought the team’s nine-year title drought to an end.
Numerous names have been lined up over the past week for Esteghlal job, including Foolad Khuzestan manager Javad Nekounam – an ex-Esteghlal and Iranian international midfielder – who turned down an offer by his former club.
Esteghlal is now in talks with Nouri, 42, who was first introduced to the German top-flight in the 2016/17 season.
The German-Iranian was appointed to the Werder Bremen role, first on an interim basis, before he was handed a permanent contract, which ran through to the end of the season.
He also served as a caretaker manager at the Bundesliga outfit Hertha BSC for a short spell in 2020.
His last managerial role came at the Greek third-tier club AO Kavala earlier this year, before he was sacked following a run of three wins in 15 outings.
