Iran’s Mehdi Ahmad-Kohani capped off his impressive campaign at the 9th Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships with the silver medal of the rings contests in Doha, Qatar.

On Friday, Ahmad-Kohani, a bronze medalist at the event in 2019 as well as last year’s FIG World Cup, tallied 14.433 points for a runner-up finish behind the reigning world champion Lan Xingyu of China, who scored 14.500 points for his second successive Asian gold, while Lin Guan-yi of the Chinese Taipei took the bronze with 14.200 points.

A 12th place in the men’s individual all-around event had seen Ahmad-Kohani secure a berth at the World Championships – starting October 26 in Liverpool, Britain.

His silver medal was only the second for the country in the history of the competition, after Saeed-Reza Keikha had stood second in the pommel horse competition in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in 2019.

The pommel horse event in Doha, however, finished in despair for Keikha, also an Asian bronze winner in 2017, as he stood seventh with 13.300 points.

Jordanian Ahmad Abu al-Soud scored 15.233 points to claim the gold won, with Nariman Kurbanov (14.800 points) of Kazakhstan and China’s Yin Dehang (14.600 points) in the second and third places respectively.
