A’arad Hosseini scored a single goal, yet the most important one, as Iran walked away with a 2-0 victory over France for the bronze medal at the IHF Men's Youth Beach Handball World Championship in the Greek port city of Heraklion.

Following a semifinal setback against Brazil on the preceding night, Iran started Sunday’s game – a repeat of the group phase clash that Iran had also won – right on the front foot, coming out victorious in the first period by a 20-16 scoreline.

A thrilling second period proved to be a much closer contest as it finished 18-18 in normal time, before Hosseini’s golden goal decided the tie and handed Iran a first international medal in the sport in only the second edition of the competition.

"It is an historic moment for us, a great accomplishment to win this bronze medal," Iran head coach Mehdi Qashqaei told the event’s official website afterwards.

“We were nervous, but we managed to overcome the pressure with our performance in the first set. We all wanted to win desperately. We fought hard and we won. Congratulations to my players.

“A bronze medal was the least we deserved [in the tournament],” added the Iranian coach, whose side had beaten Qatar to the Asian title in late March.

Iran’s Ali Heidarian, meanwhile, finished the tournament with an individual recognition as he was named the best player in the pivot position, being picked up for the All-Star Team.

The men’s final showpiece on the Greek island of Crete saw Croatia beat Brazil 2-1, while Spain overcame the Netherlands for the women’s gold, with Poland taking the bronze.
