The Iranian foreign minister said the Islamic Republic has held no direct talks with Egypt, stressing that development of relations between Tehran and Cairo is in both nations’ interests.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in Damascus while commenting on the most important achievements of his visit to Syria, IRNA reported.
He added certain efforts are being made to normalize ties between Tehran and Cairo within the framework of the cooperation among Muslim countries.
Both Iran and Egypt have interest sections in Cairo and Tehran, the top diplomat said, describing Egypt as an important country in the Muslim world.
He noted that his trip to Damascus was in line with a Tehran visit by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in early May, and his talks with his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi.
Amir-Abdollahian added that during his trip to Syria, good progress was made regarding the implementation of a previously signed agreement between the two countries, and it was decided that he and his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, should see to the execution of certain parts of the deal.
He added that the joint economic commission is also expected to hold a meeting soon.
Turning to his talks with Assad, Amir-Abdollahian said, “We discussed diverse issues for two hours. Among our important missions at the time being is exploring the possibility of special military operations by Turkey in certain parts of Syria, which was also on our agenda in the trip I took a few days ago to Ankara.”
He gave the assurance that Tehran seeks to resolve the crisis and problem between the two countries through a political approach and is against resorting to war.
The Iranian foreign minister said the two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in the trade, economy and tourism sectors through implementing the agreements.
He expressed hope that the outcomes of his trip and the agreements reached would help safeguard the two nations’ interests.
Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Damascus on Saturday and returned to Tehran on Sunday. During the visit, he also held talks with his Syrian counterpart.
