Porto striker Mehdi Taremi is nominated for the Liga Portugal Most Valuable Player award for the 2021/22 season.
The Iranian international will compete with nine other players in the Portuguese top flight – including three Porto teammates – for the prestigious award, set to be announced on Tuesday at the Kick Off ceremony in the city of Porto.
Taremi scored 20 goals in 32 league appearances, while providing 13 assists for his teammates, to play an integral part to Porto’s title-winning campaign.
This was the best season yet in Portugal for the 29-year-old Iranian –since joining Rio Ave in July 2019 – who also bagged a brace in a 3-1 victory over Tondela in the Taça de Portugal final in May as Porto completed a domestic league and cup double.
A glittering campaign had seen Taremi being named in the Liga Portugal Team of the Year last week.
Also on the 10-man shortlist – voted by the league’s coaches and players – are last season’s top scorer Darwin Núñez, who left Benfica for Premier League giant Liverpool in June; Gil Vicente trio Pedrinho, Francisco Navarro, and Samuel Lino; as well as SC Braga winger Ricardo Horta and Pablo Sarabia – on loan to Sporting Lisbon from PSG.
Colombian winger Luis Díaz, who netted 14 goals for Porto before joining Liverpool in January, plus two former teammates Vitinha, who has signed for PSG for the start of next season, and Otávio will also fancy their chances to take home the award.
